The forest had been quiet for so long that I almost believed there was nothing left to find. Then I saw the mossy stump...

Moss had swallowed its edges, roots twisted through the ground like old veins, and magical mushrooms stood beside the stump, as if to protect what lies near. In the center of the stump sat a stack of books beneath the faint glow of its lanterns and candles. Not abandoned, exactly. Waiting. There is a difference. Abandoned things are forgotten. Waiting things know someone will eventually come looking for them.

I couldn't help wondering who had left the books there, and more importantly, why. Perhaps the stories inside are warnings disguised as fairytales. Perhaps they tell of people who wandered too deep into these woods and never found their way home. Or perhaps the darkest secret isn't what the books contain at all, but why they were left where someone could eventually find them. Either way, some stories are better discovered slowly, one page at a time, while the forest listens.
